DIY Wedding update, Hygge FRESH FLORALS

DIY Wedding update, Hygge Floral Design fresh florals

A DIY wedding in May, and creating my own florals for the day? Yes please.

The wedding itself was planned and designed to be simple, low key with some elevated touches. I also decided early on, that the wedding industry can be incredibly wasteful and lead you to believe you need everything and it all must be brand new, so I wanted to ensure I did the wedding thing within my ideas of slower living.

The starting point for this was either my vintage engagement ring, or the wedding dress I purchased for under £40 from Tynedale Hospice Charity shop in Hexham (and this included shoes)!

After over 12 months of shopping in charity shops, facebook marketplace and vinted, we had a good stash of table cloths, glassware, vases, plates, and we were armed with bin bags full of paper chains to transform the village hall.

Elevated touches? This was important to me, as although I wanted the wedding day to remain small and simple, I still wanted it to feel special. The florals were going to bring interest and elegance to the space, but I wanted to do so with ONLY British grown flowers. Supporting british flower growers is in my business, so would this change because it was my wedding day? Thank you to the amazing Kate at Northumbrian Flowers, Elm Street Flower Farm and Smith and Munson, the flowers were amazing.

In the run up to the wedding day, I was walking the dog when I came across a tree being chopped down (it was all very legit), so I plucked up the courage and ran over to ask if I could have a large cutting, they said yes! I wasn’t entirely sure what I wanted it for, but with a village hall space to fill I knew it would come in handy. The tree ended up being used as a photo booth set up, with a vintage chair, a painted dust sheet and a flower arrangement.

It was also in the days running up to the wedding that I noticed the Cow Parsley blooming in the hedgerows, so I foraged some bunches to use. This is now one of my favorite parts of the wedding, including flowers that have been grown right on our doorstep.

I am so pleased that after studying floristry for almost 2 years, I have now completed my first wedding, and it was my own!

Please get in touch if you are looking for someone to create relaxed, local, seasonal florals for your wedding day.
